Transfer 17 Week 3

view from the 15th floor

This week was good.

Monday was a normal Pday as always. We visited some people and knocked some doors in the evening but not much to report on.

Tuesday we had District Meeting and then had lunch with the district afterwards. After that we did some calling around for Elder Jensen because he needs to get an appointment with a local doctor, nothing serious. It was pretty funny as neither one of us has ever had to deal with setting up appointments our dealing with that kind of stuff so it took a little while to get him in the right place.. it got done though. Tuesday evening we were finally able to sit down with Josh and Michelle and their kids. It went really really good! We taught them the Restoration and they're super excited to start reading the Book of Mormon and to have us start coming over and teaching them. They said that in due time, they would be baptized if they came to know our message was true.

Wednesday we got called to help a member move to another location in town. It was fun as She was moving into the tallest building in Escanaba, onto the 15th floor.  Luckily for us there was an elevator, but unlucky for all the other people traveling through, as one of the two elevators was down for maintenance. At times there was a line 10 people long waiting for the elevator as were trying to stuff the elevator full of mattresses and dressers. We got it done though.. At least some of it. We had to come back and help out more today (Monday) as she's doing the moves in parts. We'll probably be called back to help again sometime this week! It's a good work out though. I enjoy it. After the move, we had dinner with the Wilbers and then went from there, straight to our appointment with Joseph and Jill. Joseph wasn't able to sit in this time but we were able to read some of the Book of Mormon with Jill, answer some questions and work out how were going to help them quit smoking. They're going to make it a new years resolution to quit, so hopefully it goes well! After Joseph and Jill, the Zone Leaders showed up from Green Bay to do some work with us, so we knocked some doors until 9 and then called it a night.

Thursday, still working with the Zone Leaders, Elder Palacios and I knocked a lot of doors, meeting some interesting and some nice people.. haha It was cool spending time with Elder Palacios as he is my mission brother (meaning we got trained by the same elder) After Lunch, we had a nice lesson with Sherry. We talked about Obedience and established some expectations on why we come over and what we would like to see as missionaries. It went well. After Sherrys we knocked more doors and were able to find some new investigators before the Zone Leaders had to head back down to Green Bay. After they left we finished off the night by having a really awesome dinner with Sister Bizeau. We were finally able to meet her husband as his job keeps him away for months at a time. They're awesome, going over there is the best.

Friday we had our lesson with John Madacey in the morning. We sat down, talked for a while about various things and then were able to read some of the book of Mormon with him. He understood it rather well and were hopefully going to be able to get back in with him this next week and share the Plan of Salvation with him. The rest of the day was spent Weekly Planning, and knocking more doors.

Saturday we spent a lot of the day shoveling as we got like 5 inches or so the night before. Elder Jensen also had to write his entire talk that he gave on Sunday. We were able to visit various people though and set up some appointments. President Schmidt had us and other guests over for dinner. It was fun as we played some board games, sang karaoke and talked for a while. We had to bum out early though as our curfew still applies even on new years.

Sunday morning was church. Sherry was able to come which is always exciting. We were asked to teach the YM/YW class during 2nd hour and so I taught the whole hour about the God Head. I had no preparation but I felt as if the lesson went really well! Lots of participation and no dull moments not knowing where to go with it.. haha After Church we did our studies, finished up some weekly planning and then went over to see Capt Jim as we weren't able to see him Saturday night. After Capt Jim we went over and gave Josh the sacrament and then finished off the night having dinner at our place.

It was honestly a really good week and we were able to get a lot done, finding new people and continuing to work with the ones we have! Happy New Year!

Transfer 17 Week 2

This week was great!

Monday was a normal Pday in the U.P.. which doesn't consist of much. We had dinner with Sister Bizeau, which is always fun. She made us breakfast food and it was amazing, as we rarely (if ever) have bacon and sausage for breakfast.

Tuesday we had District Meeting which went well. It's always good being able to see and spend time with some other missionaries. After that we basically knocked doors and visited people the rest of the day. We were able to meet this really cool 83 year old man named John Madaczi. He let us right into his home, (which he made himself) and showed us all around it. He's very good with woodwork so his home was just beautiful. He even had his own Sauna in the space under the staircase.. After the little tour we sat down and talked with him about his life and what not. However, unlike most experienced people in life, who just babble on and on (not that they aren't interesting, because they are) but he let us have our turn to share our message. It went great. We taught him all about the Restoration and the Book of Mormon and he ate it up. We set up another appointment to come see him this upcoming week. It was great, he is a very nice man and he seemed actually very interested in our message, not just our company.

Wednesday we helped out at the soup kitchen in the morning, which you always leave feeling satisfied, as it is not light work. After that we knocked more doors and visited more people, trying to get E. Jensen familiar with more and more people. In the evening we had dinner at the Pugh's home. They're such a nice couple that are always looking for ways to serve, we left there and immediately went to our lesson with Joseph and Jill. Our lesson with them went great. We taught them the Word of Wisdom, a lesson which I, personally have been really nervous to teach them, as we have such a good relationship with them and I didn't want to ruin it.. But it honestly couldn't had gone better.. The spirit was super strong as we testified of the importance of the law and they totally opened up and we were able to answer concerns and we left with them committed to strive to live it. It was honestly, a very very good lesson, and were going to continue to work with them and help them stop smoking.

Thursday was weekly planning which always takes up a good chunk of the day. However we were able to see Sherry and have a really good lesson with her about the 10 commandments. It was a pretty straight forward lesson and we had some good conversation but were running out of things to teach her as shes not progressing as she should be.. While out tracting it was pretty funny because I was telling Elder Jensen about this time a couple months ago that an Elder I was on exchanges with forgot his name tag, so he had to use this other random name tag in our apartment which said Elder Fry on it, so during the whole exchange we had to call Elder Smith Elder Fry, because that was the name tag he had on. Anyways, i was telling him about that and then the next door we knocked on, they guy opened the door and I introduced myself and then accidentally introduced Elder Jensen as Elder Fry (because that name was on my mind) but we ended up talking with this guy at the door for quite some time and he accepted a book of Mormon and said we could come back and as we were leaving he asked for our names again and Elder Jensen just said Elder Fry, because that's what I introduced him as and it was just a wreck... hahahah super funny though, it'll be quite awkward as we try to follow up with the guy and he knows us as Elder Stevens and Elder Fry... hahah

Friday our return appointment with John Madaczi fell through as he called us canceling the appointment 5 minutes before because he had some emergency come up, we set up another appointment for next week however, so hopefully we'll be able to get in. The rest of the day was just tracting and visiting Bunny and the Gentz family and various other investigators wishing them a Merry Christmas and trying to set things up.

Saturday was a great day as we spent most of the day in members homes. It snowed the night before, so in the morning we went over and shoveled Sister Johnson's drive way, after that we went to Brother Jacobsons and spent some time there. After seeing him we went over to the Wilbers house for "lunch" We didn't start eating until about 3:30 though, but the food was amazing. We had Lobster tails and steak. I haven't had seafood in SOOO long.. and it was amazing. Right after the Wilbers we went over to President Schmidt's home for dinner, luckily they just had horderves so we didn't have to stuff ourselves too much. They had a lot of family over so it was fun being able to play various games and talk with people.

Sunday morning we woke up and immediately went out and opened our boxes our families had sent us. Thanks so much for all the gifts!! :) After that we got ready for Church and had a really nice Christmas presentation for us. Lots of songs and various narrations. After church we went home and did our studies, cleaned the apartment some and then came to the Church to Skye in the family history center. It was great being able to see my family! Definitely the highlight of the week! (other than the lesson with Joseph and Jill) After Skyping we had to drive a ways out to the Pugh's home again as they had us over for Christmas Dinner. It was a quiet night, but we were very grateful to spend it with them.

Well that was the week! The work has been a bit slower due to the Christmas season but were hoping it catches back up as everyone gets back to work and school!

Transfer 17 Week 1

Welp, Transfer 17.. this is my last transfer. Wow.

Sorry about not having an email last week, our day was crazy! The church's Internet was out and so we had to run around like wild chickens trying to find a way to email.. (the libraries were closed due to snow..)

This past Wednesday was Transfers, I'm staying in Escanaba for my last transfer and an Elder named Elder Jensen came up to replace Elder Hill. Elder Jensen and I get along great.

Since Elder Hill was leaving, most of Monday and Tuesday was spent packing and visiting various people so that he could say goodbye. We stopped by the Gentz family and we settled that it would be best to continue the lessons after the holidays, in turn we had to drop their baptismal dates because there would be no way for them to make it on January 8th if we didn't meet with them until then.. At least were still in contact with them and they're willing to still meet!

On Wednesday we drove down to Green Bay, to transfer point. We were waiting until almost 4 for our new companions to make it to Green Bay, since they were pretty late, we had to immediately leave back for Escanaba to make it to our appointment with Joseph and Jill. We made it though, only 30 mins late and had a pretty good lesson with them. Jill is still flying through the Book of Mormon! Its super exciting to hear her bare her testimony on it..

Thursday was weekly planning, and we had a pretty good lesson with Sherry as well. We showed up and she was wrapping all her presents for her grandchildren, so we helped her wrap a bunch of presents and then read some of the Book of Mormon with her. Marrinette had a baptism last week so we were able to have Sherry come to the baptism. We talked with her about the service and how she liked it. She still had a hold up with Authority.. we've explained it numerous times but it doesn't seem to click. Hmm.

Friday and Saturday were days full of visiting a bunch of people and introducing Elder Jensen to them, some door knocking, and trying to stay warm in the 0 degree weather!

Sunday was church, I was asked to give a talk on Christmas so I gave a 20 or so minute talk on trying to keep the true meaning of Christmas on our minds. I think it went rather well. The rest of the day was the same as usual! Finished it off with seeing Josh in the evening.

Things are going great though! Trying to make this last transfer a memorable one!

Have a good week!

Elder Stevens

Transfer 16 Week 4

This week was full of appointments falling through.. Most of those appointments we set up last week, the people either canceled or weren't home.. That's missionary work I guess.

Monday was my 22 Month mark. Crazy. We had a normal Pday and then around 6 we helped Brother DePaul move the Manger for a good sized nativity set outside the church. After setting it in position to get decorated by some sisters we went out to KFC with Brother DePaul. After the food we stopped by some people trying to follow up on their Book Of Mormon reading as it was raining pretty hard.

Tuesday we had District Meeting and since it was the last district meeting of the transfer we went out and took some pics on the pier by the bay. I'll link some pics at the bottom of the email. After district meeting I went on an exchange with Elder Schoenfeld in Escanaba. We had a really busy night full of appointments, however every single one of them fell through so we had a cool time tracting.. We actually were able to meet some really cool people though and get some return appointments.

Wednesday we helped out at the soup kitchen in the morning. We had to leave a bit early though to make it to another appointment, which.. fell through. After knocking more doors we were able to help out Sister Marunde with some things as she is moving to Florida. We were able to use our truck and move some dressers to another persons house. After our service we exchanged back and then Elder Hill and I had a really good lesson with Jill and Joseph. We read Mosiah 1: 3-7 with them and talked about the importance of Reading the scriptures. Jill is still cruising through the Book of Mormon, things are going great with them.

Thursday we helped out Sister Marunde for a little bit in the morning and then did some weekly planning. We had appointments that day but they all fell through as well.. We were able to knock more doors and actually find some pretty interested people that we set return appointments with. Hopefully those will go through..

Friday we did our monthly service at St Vinnys helping them collect hangers. Later in the day we had a good lesson with Sherry. We were able to finish the families and temples pamphlet with her, brother DePaul came as well and it was a really good lesson. After that, another lesson fell through and then we spent more time knocking doors and stopping my various people.

Saturday we helped out Sister Marunde for the final time as she took off for Florida that night. We loaded up our truck with a bunch of her junk that needed to go to the dumb and we hauled it over there for her. That was fun.. as the dump had 0 signs so we had nooo idea where to go.. we eventually figured it out though..  Later in the day we had 2 more appointments fall through as they weren't home and so we.. knocked more doors. Nothing else to do when those things happen! In the evening we saw Brother Jacobson which is always awesome.. We went outside and lit off a flare! Just so he could show us.. hahah

Sunday was church. Which was nice as always.. After church we finished our studies and then went to go visit some less actives. Our appointment with the Gentz family... fell through, and so we were able to knock more doors! with little success.. Later in the evening the branch had a get together to sing carols and eat cookies before the Christmas Devotional. It was a great get together and a great devotional.

Hopefully next week our appointments will go through and we'll actually be able to do some more teaching! None the less, it was a great week.

Elder Stevens.

Transfer 16 Week 3

This week was good!

Monday was a normal Pday. In the Evening we were able to stop by Jill and Joseph. We talked with Jill, Joseph was out hunting.. which a lot of people here are doing.. We talked with her for a while at her doorstep and was able to talk a little about the Book of Mormon with her and we set up another time to come by since they've been super busy. Shes flying through the Book of Mormon, it's exciting! After that we just knocked doors. We've been able to get into a lot of houses using the survey and that continued to work rather well this week.

Tuesday we had district meeting. After that we went on exchanges. I went with Elder Smith and stayed in Escanaba. We went to Dusty's Uke class, which was great as always.. after that we visited some people and knocked more doors.

Wednesday we showed up for the Soup Kitchen but no one told us the news as it wasn't open due to thanksgiving. So we had a lot more time to knock doors.. Good things came of it though because we were able to find a new family to teach! We talked with the Mother of 4 kids named Jenny. We did the survey with her and taught her a quick restoration. It all made so much sense to her she said and she also expressed really wanting to go to a new church and bringing her family closer to Christ. We feel like she is super prepared! We set up a time to go teach her, her husband and all of their kids this Tuesday. We'll be on exchanges again, so hopefully it goes well!  We eventually ended up exchanging back and finished off the night seeing Josh.

Thursday was Thanksgiving! In the Morning we went over to the Wilbers home for Thanksgiving lunch. It was great! The food and company were very enjoyable. After the Wilbers we drove a ways to the Berry's home. We had lots of time to spare before our next meal so in the mean time we played board games and this super awesome game called Battletag. It. was. so. fun. Basically it was just lazer tag, but an outdoor version of it. There were various settings and game modes you could play. I got really into it.. I had to enjoy it while I could I suppose! We spent the rest of the night at the Berrys having a really good meal and great company. It was very enjoyable as they wanted to make it the best for us as we were away from family.

Friday we weekly planned. We were able to have a good lesson with Sister Kirchner. We shared a scripture along with the new #LightTheWorld initiative the church produced. Its a really great video.  Later in the day we stopped by and set up more appointments with people and then knocked some doors. We were able to see the Gentz, we haven't been able to meet with them as one of their kids has had some health issues. Those issues have mostly been squared away so they said they would be able to set up weekly visits again which is crucially needed if they are to make their baptismal date of January 8th!

Saturday we were able to go and help Sherry with some finishing touches of a section she added onto her trailer. It was a little chilly and they warmed us up with some nice hot chocolate and oreos. Later we stopped by and talked with various other people and knocked more doors. We seemed to have a lot more success this week knocking as we ended out the week with 9 new investigators!

Sunday was a nice day, we had church and then finished up some studies. After that we knocked doors and stopped by Sister Marunde. Shes being evicted from her apartment and might move down to Florida soon. We tried to help out in any way we could. There isn't much to be done though. We finished off the day and week by visiting and giving the Sacrament to Josh.

These weeks are flying by! Today is my 22 month mark. I've only got 2 months left! Pretty crazy. Great things are happening though. Hope you all have a good week!

Transfer 16 Week 2

Elder Miller and I after our Exchange.

This week was crazy,

Monday was pretty normal however at 6 we drove down to Green Bay and stayed the night with the Zone Leaders.

Tuesday we Blitzed the Zone Leaders area, I went with Elder Fry. Since the Zone Leaders are a Spanish set of missionaries, we went around knocking on people's doors, asking them if they knew where any Hispanics lived. Its was pretty neat. Since Zone Conference was the next day, and they needed to prepare a musical number for the meeting, Elder Hill and I got dragged into singing along with the ZLs and the Hmong Elders. We practiced some at the church so that we would be ready for the meeting the next day. Later we had a really good dinner with the Arkos family. They don't speak English but they made some amazing Mexican food.. I was grateful to be there. In the evening we had a really good lesson with these 2 kids named Christian and Duber. They spoke English and I got along with them super well. Over all it was a good exchange. We stayed the night again at the ZLs apartment, the A.P.s also stayed the night that night.

Wednesday we had a really good Zone Conference! Lots of inspiring and uplifting messages and ways that we can be more effective as the weather changes. (Which its changing fast) Our musical number went pretty well.. Elder Hill and I sang the First Verse of I know that my Redeemer lives, then the Spanish Elders sang the Second Verse in Spanish, then the Hmong Elders sang the 3rd verse in Hmong and for the 4th verse we all sang it in English. It was very powerful! I had never performed in front of that many people singing before.. After Zone Conference we went on an exchange with the Marinette Elders. I went with Elder Miller and we spent the rest of the night driving back to Marinette.

Thursday we had a really good time in Marinette. We taught one of their Less actives that they're working with named Manny. Manny is super cool! We went over the Book of Mormon with him and the importance of it. We spent most of the rest of the day knocking on peoples doors and visiting various potentials. Elder Miller is a really good friend so it was awesome to spend the day with him. Since we had a lot of appointments in Escanaba Thursday night, we weren't able to exchange back until Friday morning. So I spent another night in Marinette.

Friday morning we exchanged back first thing in the morning. It was nice to be back in my own area.. haha However we spent most of the day weekly planning. However we were able to knock some doors and meet 2 really awesome ladies that we might be able to start teaching.  In the evening we were able to get in with a returning less active family named the Jones. We taught them the Gospel of Jesus Christ and really focused on daily repentance and the sacrament. It went really well.

Saturday we had Correlation meeting with Brother Ollero in the morning. He took us out to Wendy's afterwords. After that we went to Sister Bizeau's kids birthday party as she really wanted us to come, and some of the branch would be there. That was fun. We were going to help Sherry fix some stuff on her trailer but because there was snow flurries and it was really windy she canceled that.. which left us to just knocking doors the rest of the day. We really had to bundle up as it really is quiet freezing here now.

Sunday we had church, which we were asked to teach Sunday school and priesthood on very short notice. Those went well though. After church we finished up studies and of course knocked some more doors! We stopped by some of our investigators we hadn't seen in a while, and while we were stopping by Shannon, her husband who we had never met came out and angrily told us to stop coming by. He went on to say that he didn't care if his wife or kids took the lessons and talked with us, he just didn't want it in his home.. He was quiet angry, but I thanked him for being upfront about it and we started talking about a lot of things. It was pretty funny as he did a complete 180, he ended up inviting us to go play basketball with him and some buddies in the mornings (which we already do with President Schmidt, so we invited him to ours) and he might let us help out with some house repairs hes doing. Funny how people can turn around so quickly if you just get to know them.

Welp, the week flew by as I was barely in our area for most of the week! Things are still going well though, just continually trying to meet and see everyone were working with!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Elder Stevens

Transfer 16 Week 1

This week was pretty good!

Monday was Pday as usual. We were able to knock some doors in the evening and we were actually able to talk to a lot of people! We met this really nice lady named Holly, who had seen our church building earlier that day and wondered who went there and then later that night we knock on her door! Pretty funny. It was a good day though

Tuesday was a day full of contacting and visiting people. We did some Park Contacting in the Morning, not many people were outside as it was very windy. We knocked some doors after that and were able to meet this really nice lady named Trudy, who said we could come back and this guy named Josh who invited us to come back on Friday. After knocking doors and visiting various other people we went to Dusty's Ukulele class. That was fun as always, being able to pluck around on a Uke while fellow shipping a less active. Good times. After Uke class we went over to Brother Jacobsons for Sister Bizeaus daughters birthday party. We had cake and ice cream and were entertained with various election night info and what not. We finished off the night there.

Wednesday morning we woke up to the News that Trump had one the Election. Big Surprise. Later in the morning we helped out at the Soup Kitchen, spirits weren't too high there and there were a lot more people than normal there. We went about the day as normal. At one particular door, we were talking about the Restoration with an older lady. We got to prayer, and how we could know the truthfulness of our message through prayer, she went on to say "Well God didn't answer my prayer..  Donald Trump won!" then she nicely shut the door on us. Pretty funny in all honesty.. hah Jill and Joseph had to cancel our appointment this week as Jill was sick. However we were able to have a really good lesson with this lady named Stephanie. We saw her with Brother Berry. We taught her the Restoration and committed her to a soft bap date, meaning that if she got her answer she would be baptized.. We ended off the night with that lesson.

Thursday we were able to have a really good weekly planning session. Sherry had to cancel her appointment because she was feeling under the weather. We spent a lot of the day knocking doors as usual and were able to meet some nice people like Travis and Joe. Decent day.

Friday we were able to have a good lesson with Sister Kirchner in the morning. We shared a General Conference talk which we felt could really help her out. I think the lesson went well. The rest of the day we spent visiting a ton of people that we haven't seen in a while and followed up with a bunch of people we had knocked into in the past. We were able to set up a lot of appointments for the future which is good.

Saturday we went over and helped Sister Kirchner rake the remainder of her leaves in the morning. It's always good to get out of the white shirts and ties.. We did some knocking on some doors in Gladstone and Escanaba. There's not much to do other than that when you have nothing else going on.. We stopped by Sherry and Joseph and Jill as well, seeing how they were doing, setting up more appointments and what not. It was a good day.

Sunday we had church, which was really good. Finished up some studies after wards and then stopped by more people. We were able to meet this really nice lady named Lora who had just moved in less than a week ago. She recently became really good friends with a Mormon and is really interested in us coming back in a couple weeks. We'll have to see how that goes. We saw Josh in the evening and then finished off our night with Dinner!

It was a really good week! Lots of finding, but its become fun being able to meet various people all day. Next week is going to be really hectic as tonight were driving down to Green Bay! I'll link some pictures that I took on Elder Hills Film Camera he has let me borrow the past month or so. I was able to get them developed this week.

Hope you all have a good week as well!
